This silver
commemorative dollar was issued in 1987 to mark the 200th anniversary of the
signing of the United States Constitution in 1787.
Physical Characteristics
Struck in .900 fine silver, the coin weighs 26.73 grams and measures 38.1
millimeters in diameter.
Obverse
The obverse features sheets of parchment, a quill pen, and the opening words of
the Constitution, “We the People,” symbolizing the foundation of American
democracy.

The design was created by engraver Patricia Lewis Verani.
Reverse
The reverse depicts thirteen diverse figures representing the original states
and the broad cultural and social fabric of the nation.

This design was also engraved by Patricia Lewis Verani.
Minting and Issue
The coin was struck at the United States Mints in Philadelphia (P) and San
Francisco (S) in both uncirculated and proof formats. The maximum authorized
mintage was 10 million coins. Actual sales exceeded 3 million pieces, a strong
performance compared to many later modern commemorative issues. Coins were sold
individually and as part of two-coin and four-coin commemorative sets.
