Galileo Galilei was a renowned Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer who played a pivotal role in the scientific revolution of the 17th century. Born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy, he is often referred to as the "father of modern observational astronomy," the "father of modern physics," and the "father of modern science."

  1. Astronomical Observations: Galileo was one of the first to use a telescope to study the heavens, making groundbreaking observations. He discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter, now known as the Galilean moons, observed the phases of Venus, and studied the surface of the Moon.

  2. Support for Heliocentrism: Galileo supported the Copernican theory that the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun. His findings challenged the geocentric model, which held that the Earth was the center of the universe.

  3. Physics and Motion: Galileo conducted experiments on motion and falling objects, leading to important insights into the laws of physics. He demonstrated that objects of different masses fall at the same rate in the absence of air resistance, laying the groundwork for Newton's laws of motion.

  4. Conflict with the Church: Galileo's support for heliocentrism brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church. In 1633, he was tried by the Inquisition and forced to recant his views. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

  5. Publications: His major works include "Sidereus Nuncius" ("Starry Messenger"), which detailed his astronomical observations, and "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems," which compared the Copernican system with the traditional Ptolemaic model.
