Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, was a notable figure in early 20th-century European history. Born on November 25, 1868, he ruled the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1892 until the end of the German monarchy in 1918. Known for his patronage of the arts, Ernst Ludwig was instrumental in establishing the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, fostering the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement. His reign witnessed significant cultural and architectural developments in Hesse-Darmstadt. Despite his artistic contributions, his rule was overshadowed by the tumultuous political landscape of the time, leading to the eventual dissolution of his duchy after World War I.
